How Hypnotherapy works.

Hypnotherapy is a therapy in which you are guided into a state of deep relaxation where the conscious mind becomes receptive to positive suggestions. This allows your subconscious mind to accept these suggestions as true and make them a part of you. These suggestions can include: relaxing the body, eliminating physical symptoms, changing attitudes and behaviors, increasing motivation and self-esteem, developing intuition, enhancing creativity and imagination, improving memory recall.

The Subconscious Super Computer

The human mind is made up really of two parts. The part that you are that you are consciously aware of that communicates with the outside world and the subconscious or inner part of the mind that we aren’t aware of.

It can help to think of our mind as a computer program, our conscious mind is like the part of the program you can see and interact with while the subconscious mind is like the programming in that tells the program how to look and act when we interact with it.

It’s just the most powerful super computer in the world as it runs all the programming for our mind and body.

Protective mechanisms

Like all computer programs the subconscious mind needs a directive of function to know how to operate.

The directives the subconscious mind has are, among many others, to keep us safe from anything it perceives as harmful, filter the persons environment and to direct behavior, emotion and physical sensation within the person themselves.

So, in order to keep you safe from a subconsciously perceived threat, behaviors will be created that at the time work very well for whatever purpose they were created but as we move through life and try to move on, the subconscious still perceives a threat, and the behavior/emotion persists.

With the right help and care you can find deep inner healing from the trauma you experienced in the past and stop repeating destructive patterns of behavior leaving you free to create the life you envision.

The Conscious Mind is Lazy

The conscious mind is not only lazy but if the conscious mind had to be constantly working, constantly taking in all of the stimulation that the subconscious mind filters we would go literally mad in no time and so it is necessary that the conscious mind leaves much of the day to day running of our lives to the subconscious mind.

Because of this, many of our behaviors become imprinted or “programmed” into the subconscious mind, forming routines or habits.

When this happens, the behavior stops being something we do on a conscious level and our awareness of the behavior decreases.

Subconscious Programming

Take for example putting on your seatbelt in a car.

We know how to do it, we know why we do it and that we have to do it but most often, for most of us, it isn’t something we actually think about or make a decision to do each time we get in a car.

When we get into the car a series of steps occur that ensure this step is never missed.

Thanks to our subconscious programming, it happens automatically, without you even having to think about it.

The same thing happens with all of our daily tasks, in fact 95% of everything we do is determined in the subconscious and latest studies reveal that our subconscious mind knows what we are going to do a full 7 seconds before we are consciously aware of it.

The Mind Body Connection

The body agrees with what the mind believes.

Because the subconscious communicates directly with our body, any beliefs held in the subconscious will automatically happen in the body.

So often times beliefs we hold beliefs about our health, or our body can prevent us from moving past physical ailments such obesity and chronic pain.

Focus on Your End Goal

The focus of hypnotherapy sessions is to move you into your “goal” state.

Imagine where you are at now is point A and where you want to be is point B. This point B becomes your goal state.

This goals state will vary depending on the issues you have and what you want to achieve.

If you are anxious your goal state may be to feel confident or strong or to be able to handle anything that comes your way.

If you wish to lose weight, your goal state may be to have control of your eating and enjoy exercise or perhaps to feel strong healthy and full of vitality.

Whatever your end goal is, you will never get to point B by focusing on point A.

By focusing on the goal you want to achieve, your brain is actively being wired for success.

Your Language

Your own language forms the basis of all of your therapy moving forward.

In each case there are usually dozens of ways to tackle a problem, all of which will be effective to some degree.  Which one is used comes down to you, your individual needs and the language you use.

Your subconscious mind will respond to suggestions given in your own language at a faster and deeper rate so therapy it is focused on your language and the words you use to describe what you want is included in the suggestions you hear..

Get the Conscious Mind Out of the Way

This part of you that is reading now, consciously thinking about what you have read and how it might relate to your situation is not the part of yourself we work with in a hypnotherapeutic setting.

In fact the aim is to get the conscious mind out of the way so that we can talk directly to the subconscious mind where the behavior is stored.

By being able to access the subconscious we can give suggestions directly to the subconscious that change the thoughts, emotions and behaviors that are destructive and unhelpful into positive thoughts, emotions and behaviors.

Because the changes don’t happen on a conscious level, you don’t then have to go away and think about making the changes, they just happen…easily and naturally.

Move Past Talking

Talk therapies like counselling and psychology are great if you need to talk through your issues or maybe are trying to figure some stuff out. Talking through things can help arm you with more information about yourself, situation and your emotions.

But what happens when you have done this work?

You have done the talking; you have the information but for some reason it just isn’t helping.  The old bothersome thoughts, feelings or behaviors just don’t seem to want to shift.

This is where we come back to the subconscious programming. It is most likely that the things you want to change aren’t shifting because they have been programmed into the subconscious mind.

Once programmed, behaviors become very hard to shift on a conscious level which makes it hard to actually overcome these issues utilising standard talk models of therapy.

Because hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level there is no need to keep revisiting painful events and traumas from the past.

Combine Modalities

While hypnotherapy is the main treatment form used and is used in each session, your treatment plan and sessions may include side treatments from other modalities.

These may include but are not limited to

  • Neuro-Linguistic Programming
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Visualisation exercises
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation
  • Kinesiology elements
  •  Reframing

Sit Back and Relax

The hypnotic trance is a very natural state and most people have experienced this at some stage in their lives.

Have you ever been driving and when you have reached your destination realise that you can’t remeber the drive and you can only hope that you gave way at that round about?

Believe it or not, you were driving in a hypnotic state.

Or have you ever been reading a book and gotten to the end of a page and realise you have no clue what was written in what you just read?

Well, you were reading in a hypnotic state!

A hypnotic state is purely one in which the subconscious mind is in control of the system (again this is 95% of the time).

While in the state of hypnosis, you are always in control of yourself and you never lose consciousness, If something was happening that you didn’t like or wanted to stop, you would have the full ability to make that happen. The sensational part of hypnosis, it is so relaxing that you just won’t want to.

You don’t have to do anything to achieve a hypnotic state, you only have to be willing to follow instructions and allow yourself to drift away.

The best part though, you don’t have to do anything while you’re in a hypnotic state either, you only have to sit back, relax and enjoy the experience while your wonderful subconscious mind creates the change you’re looking for.

A Stand Alone or Conjunctive Therapy

There are many instances where hypnotherapy can be all you need to shift into the you that you really want to be.

Without the need for other interventions, just a few sessions can have you overcoming phobias, controlling your food intake or performing at your best, just to name a few.

Hypnotherapy also works brilliantly in conjucntion with and can even enhance your current treatment strategies.

Save Time and Money

Because hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level, results are much faster than other treatment forms.

This means that less sessions are generally needed than other treatment forms, saving you money and allowing you to move into the life you want to live much faster.

Consider Hypnotherapy

While hypnotherapy isn’t a magic wand or a cure all, studies have shown that not only is it effective treating all manner of issues it does so in many cases much, much faster than traditional talk therapies. Not only that, studies have also shown that when used in as part of your health care team, outcome in all areas of your life can be improved. As an added bonus as if you needed more, hypnotherapy is almost entirely relaxing and enjoyable to participate in.

Long past the traumatic event, associated emotional and physical distress can be activated even by non-threatening triggers. Hypnosis may help to identify these stimuli for resolution.

Hypnotherapy creates a trance state, a condition of intense physical and mental relaxation. While this relaxation alone may offer some relief from trauma symptoms, it also facilitates and enhances relevant additional therapies.

The relaxed, trance state allows reliving the distressing trauma in a safe environment and under the trained therapist’s supervision. More appropriate reactions to identified triggers are then introduced, gradually reducing the stress response’s severity. Your therapist may also provide ongoing ‘homework’, including breathing exercises, meditation and self-hypnosis techniques.
